In the Beginning…
My name is David Ilan. I was born in Israel, but have spent most of my life in Los Angeles. I’m an artist who is known for my drawings that are made from dots.
For the past decade, I have been drawing celebrities. They pose for me on the sets of their movies and TV shows or in their homes. I draw a portrait with pen and ink on canvas, using only dots. It’s a technique called Pointillism.
A few years ago, I was searching for a way to make a positive change in the world. I wanted to make a difference with my artwork. That’s when I came up with the concept of 1 dot = 1 person.
I created the project “Points With Purpose” (www.PointsWithPurpose.com) where I help survivors of rape and sexual abuse. It’s been an ongoing project – I’m creating a portrait of a survivor made from dots. Every single dot in the portrait represents a real survivor of rape and sexual abuse. The project is turning tragedy into beauty and healing. Many thousands of survivors from more than 150 countries are coming together to create the portrait of the survivor on the canvas. I don't add dots until people join (for free), so it is really the survivors themselves who are creating the portrait. There is also an area of the portrait where I place dots for supporters, so the project is open to everyone.
The Points With Purpose site has become a one-of-a-kind international support group where people who have received their dots are helping each other cope with the aftermath of rape or sexual abuse. Although the subject can be scary, the project is positive and uplifting. Survivors share their stories, advice and form life-long friendships with each other. I always keep up-to-date with the survivors, because they are the real people behind the dots on my canvas.
Why Jesus?
I started to notice the same word showing up in the survivors’ stories over and over again ... JESUS. As I took a closer look, I started to notice an amazing trend. In most cases, people who are strong believers in Jesus are actually further along in their recovery than those who don't mention Jesus.
You have to understand that I don't really know much about Jesus. After all, I am Jewish. I don't even know the difference between Christians and Catholics. I have a deep respect, but not a deep understanding. I really want to know exactly how Jesus helps people in such a powerful way, because I see firsthand with the survivors in Points With Purpose that he does.
Dots For Jesus
That is how Dots For Jesus came about – Points With Purpose paved the way for me to want to create a “people’s portrait of Christ” made from only dots, with each dot representing a true believer.
It is my promise to you that I will create the greatest portrait of Jesus that I can … in exchange for your answer to this one question: WHY JESUS?
You will be asked this question when you reserve your dot. Your answer will be attached to your dot for me – and people everywhere – to read. Please explain to me how Jesus Christ has made a profound difference in your life and why this is true for so many people around the world.
The portrait will be amazing because it will be the only image of Jesus made from millions of hand-drawn dots representing real believers. The people who keep the message of Jesus alive, will now literally be creating his image one person at a time and sharing your message about His meaning in your life. Millions of people from all over the world coming together in this profound and powerful project.
I need to place one million dots on the canvas to create this People’s Portrait of Christ..
Please tell everyone you know through email, online, and at church about this project so we can make it a huge success. Without the million dots, this Portrait cannot be created.
Everyone is welcome to get their dot and dots are always free. All I ask in return is the answer to the question, WHY JESUS? I hope to receive a true understanding of people's love for Jesus and millions of other people like me will also be able to read your answers and be enlightened, educated and inspired as well. Please spread the word... |
